A Guide to Leadership Coaching and Personal Development
In sharing my journey with others, I’ve noticed that many think “leadership coaching” is only for traditional leaders or those in formal roles of authority. But leadership isn’t a title—it’s a mindset, a confidence to bring your true self forward, and to act with purpose, vision, and courage. At Next Step Leadership we talk about leadership being about three things: service, responsibility and influence.

For many, a coaching journey begins with a simple truth: each of us has a unique voice and perspective that matters. Sometimes that voice is hidden inside ourselves and we cannot see the value we have to offer the world. Whether you’re an emerging professional, someone navigating a transition, or just exploring what’s next, our Becoming Unapologetically You pathway is designed to amplify and empower your voice. The other thing I've observed as I’ve been sharing more about my new venture, is that many aren’t sure what "leadership coaching" entails. This lack of clarity can mean people miss out on a potentially transformative experience.
While leadership coaching has a few things in common with roles like sports coaching, mentoring, and training, the approach and goals are distinct:
Sports Coaching Comparison: Like a sports coach, a leadership coach helps clients better understand their strengths and areas for growth. But unlike a sports coach, a leadership coach doesn’t need to know all the technical details of a client’s role or industry. Instead, they bring empathy, accountability, and insights into the client’s personal and professional growth journey.
Mentoring: Mentors typically share knowledge based on their own experiences and achievements. They offer advice based on what worked for them. While this guidance can be invaluable, the mentor’s path may not perfectly suit the mentee’s unique journey.
Training: Trainers provide structured learning on specific skills or theories. Their expertise is grounded in formal study rather than lived experience. This form of learning is excellent for building practical knowledge, but it doesn’t necessarily support individualised goal-setting or accountability.
Leadership Coach: This approach centres on you—the client—by encouraging self-discovery, helping you clarify what matters most, and aligning your actions with your personal vision. Coaching fosters your own clarity and resilience, providing a supportive space for growth and accountability as you navigate your own unique path.
In the end, mentors and trainers share knowledge, while a coach empowers you to uncover your own answers, building confidence and purpose from within.
Our Becoming Unapologetically You journey is about helping you uncover the confidence and direction you already hold, whether you're an emerging professional, navigating life changes, or ready to realise your own potential.
This commitment does require an investment of time, energy, and resources, but if you’re concerned about costs, consider discussing your professional learning and development budget with your employer. Coaching aligns with growth priorities and can deliver long-term benefits. For organisations, especially in times of spending cuts, investing in your most important asset, your people, can yield the highest returns.
If you’re ready to amplify your voice and chart a path aligned with your true self, let’s make that journey together at Next Step Leadership. Reach out today and take your first step toward Becoming Unapologetically You.
